Using the LANAP® protocol for periodontal disease treatment
When periodontal disease or periodontitis has developed, it requires the care and attention of a professional to address the infection and bring the smile back to health. At the Cleveland Center for Integrative Dentistry in Mayfield Village, Ohio, our providers are here to help with a specialized laser gum surgery protocol known as LANAP®. This laser treatment can clear the infection of the smile in a minimally invasive manner.
PerioLase fiber next to inflamed gums
LANAP® (laser-assisted new attachment procedure) is a specialized laser gum surgery that is the primary treatment recommendation for patients with periodontal disease. Treatment is performed right in our office using unique, advanced laser devices designed to help in treating the infection and improving the appearance and health of the gum tissues.
During the LANAP® procedure, Drs. Vladimir Pastouk and Dania Alfathi of the Cleveland Center for Integrative Dentistry will utilize laser technology to remove the bacteria causing gum disease infection. This procedure is minimally invasive, meaning it does not involve open surgery or stitches. It is also a relatively pain-free treatment option compared to traditional gum surgery methods and often does not require patients to have sedation or anesthetics to complete it.

LANAP® Protocol - Laser Gum Disease Treatment
The LANAP® protocol is a patient friendly, minimally invasive treatment for gum disease. What can I expect during the LANAP® procedure?
- Measurements. Our dentists measure the pocket depth to determine the severity of the condition and decide whether the laser-assisted new attachment procedure is required for the patient. Treatment of bacteria. Using our periodontal laser, we destroy the infected tissue and remove all bacteria present below the natural gum line.
- Tissue removal. During this process, the laser device removes the diseased tissue while maintaining as much healthy tissue as possible, causing no pain or discomfort to the patient.
- Removal of calculus. The laser device also removes any calculus deposits or tartar present underneath the gum tissue.
- Clotting stimulation. The laser works to stimulate the clotting process, which helps the blood form around the periodontal pocket to initiate the healing process.
- Tissue compression. Since the gum tissue adheres to the roots of the teeth, there is no need for stitches after tissue compression.
What are the benefits of LANAP® periodontal disease treatment?
LANAP® has many advantages over traditional gum surgery methods:- Less invasive. As mentioned above, the LANAP® procedure is minimally invasive. This means that the laser can target and remove only the infected gum tissue, leaving healthy tissue untouched.
- No stitches. Because there is no open surgery involved in LANAP® laser gum surgery, there is no need for stitches. This eliminates any post-procedure discomfort or inconveniences associated with traditional gum surgery methods.
- Faster healing time. Without the need for stitches, our patients typically experience a much quicker healing time with LANAP® than they would with traditional gum surgery. This means less downtime and faster recovery.
- Reduced risk of infection. Traditional gum surgery typically involves cutting into the gums, which increases the risk of infection. LANAP® treatment has a lower chance of infection due to it not requiring any incisions into the sensitive and vulnerable gum tissues.
